President Muhammadu Buhari, while addressing the leaders and elders of the Niger Delta at the Presidential Villa yesterday urged any Nigerian who has another country apart from Nigeria to relocate if he/she wishes to.
He noted that for him, he would stay back to solve Nigeria’s problems and tackle challenges confronting the nation
“We are determined to make life comfortable and affordable to all Nigerians. If anybody has a country to go to, let him go, we will stay here and salvage our country,”Garba Shehu, Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity quoted Mr. President.
According to Buhari, the leaders and Niger Delta stakeholders, considering the influence they have on the militants have much more to do to bring peace to the region
Buhari noted that peace, security, investment and prosperity are interconnected and that his administration would focus on its campaign promises of securing, fighting corruption and creating jobs.
“if we give peace a chance, investors will come here to invest.  Nobody will invest in an insecure environment.” He said
President Buhari stated that his government is confronted with a lot of problems plus the drastic fall of oil price, the inability of 27 states to pay salaries, no savings, and also dealing with elite who didn’t seem to care.
While receiving the Niger Delta leaders 16 points requests for negotiation Buhari stated that he is still expecting reports from committee he had instructed to review the implementation of the Amnesty programme
He also added that the service chiefs were putting their own assessment of the militancy situation in the Niger Delta region together.
With the reports for the implementation of the Amnesty Programme, the service chiefs assessment reports and the 16 points demands presented to him, Buhari noted that he would ensure that peace returns to the region.
“When I have these reports, including this one (just presented), we will revisit the situation (in the region) to ensure that we succeed this time.”
